Nicaragua introduces new mandatory public holidays

Nicaragua introduces new mandatory public holidays

On January 20, 2026, Law No. 1272 entered into force, amending Article 66 of the Labor Code to incorporate four new mandatory national public holidays: January 18, February 2, February 21, and November 8.

With this reform, as of this year, workers nationwide are entitled to up to 14 paid days off, or alternatively, to overtime pay, in accordance with applicable labor legislation.

What does this mean for employers?

  • On these dates, employees are entitled to paid rest.
  • If an employee works on these days, the day is considered overtime and must be paid with a 100% surcharge over the regular daily wage.

Exceptions where work is allowed without being considered overtime:

  • Activities that cannot be interrupted.
  • Urgent repairs due to force majeure.
  • Work subject to natural phenomena.
  • Food services linked to basic daily needs.
