BCIE and Honduras sign loan agreement for the construction of the El Tablón Multipurpose Dam

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) and the Government of Honduras have formalized Loan Agreement No. 2342, through which up to 300 million US dollars will be provided for the execution of the El Tablón Multipurpose Dam Construction Project, Stage I. 

This project aims to control the flooding of the Chamelecón River and protect the Sula Valley, reducing the risk of flooding in the area. Furthermore, as a multipurpose project, it will enable the use of water resources for potable water supply. 

The loan has a term of up to 20 years, with a grace period of up to five years. The funds will be allocated for the construction of the dam, the implementation of environmental and social mitigation measures, and the execution of water management contingency plans. 

Contractor activities 

The selected contractor will be responsible for constructing the dam and its associated works, ensuring compliance with environmental and social regulations. The main activities to be carried out include: 

  • Design and construction of hydraulic infrastructure. 
  • Implementation of environmental and social mitigation plans. 
  • Supervision and management of environmental risks. 
  • Development of contingency plans for potential emergencies. 
  • Implementation of strategies to reduce the carbon footprint. 

Contractor requirements 

Companies interested in participating in the bidding process must meet the following requirements: 

  • Proven experience in the construction of large-scale hydraulic infrastructure. 
  • A specialized technical team in environmental and social risk management. 
  • Submission of an environmental and social management plan that complies with BCIE regulations. 
  • Guarantee the implementation of occupational safety measures and pollution prevention protocols. 
  • Compliance with the required environmental permits and authorizations.
