Accession of El Salvador to the Customs Union between Guatemala and Honduras

The incorporation of El Salvador to the customs union of the north-Central American Triangle aims to materialize this month of July 2018. It is estimated that in the field of free transit of people, it will have a flow of 70%, which will allow the three countries to reduce the transit times of goods by border posts. Another of the main objectives of this negotiation is to form a single customs territory, in which a list of products shall enjoy free movement.

In the third round that took place in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, it was approved from each of the customs authorities a model of single-head integrated peripheral border posts, which will be implemented at the borders of La Hachadura, Anguiatú, Las Chinamas and San Cristóbal with Guatemala, as well as in El Poy and El Amatillo with Honduras.

Customs have been identified on several occasions by the private company, because the goods traffic is not registered in an agile way, and El Salvador has even been repeatedly pointed out as an important obstacle to the development of investments. Therefore, the customs integration between the three countries implies the reduction of bureaucracies and border time, as well as greater competitiveness, less transport costs and better logistical operations.
