Guatemala increases budget for the development of Prosperity Plan

The Alliance for Prosperity Plan of the Northern Triangle includes Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. This plan is focused on promoting development of programs to create optimal conditions for the population of these Central American countries with the objective of reducing migration to the United States of America by improving the quality of life in every country.

The main axes of the Prosperity Plan are the following:

  1. Stimulate the productive sector
  2. Develop human capital
  3. Improve citizen security and access to justice
  4. Strengthen institutions.

As of 2017, Guatemala increased the budget to actions related to the aforementioned Plan. In its budget for 2017, the funds allocated to it increased by almost one billion compared to 2016. According to the Ministry of Finance, the disbursements are focused on improving health, nutrition and early childhood development. It is important to mention that in terms of citizen security, these funds are excluded from the Judicial Branch, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Constitutional Court and the National Institute of Forensic Sciences.

On the other hand, the United States makes disbursements to the State of Guatemala for the development and fulfillment of the program. For this purpose, donations are administered by the agencies of the United States, USAID and the International Office of Narcotics and Law Enforcement.

In order for the State of Guatemala to continue counting on international cooperation, it must comply with a series of commitments acquired with the United States.
