Domain Names in Guatemala

Domain names are the friendly ways for the users of Internet addresses, and are commonly used to find websites. The domain name system is essentially a global addressing system. It is the way in which the domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and viceversa.

Domain names are not sold; they are delegated to an entity or person for a renewable period. Therefore, they cannot, and should not, be considered property of the applicant.

In Guatemala, the “InterNet Assigned Numbers Authority” (IANA) delegated to Universidad del Valle Guatemala (UVG) as the only entity in charge of maintaining and administrating the registry of Internet domain names with the country code assigned to Guatemala,”.gt”.

UVG is member to the Latin American and Caribbean TLD Association (LacTLD). Within its specific functions is to ensure there will not be duplicated domain names within the ccTLD and to assure fairness in the delegation of domain names under the ccTLD.

To register a domain, the first thing to do is verify that it is available at www.gt. Then it is necessary to fill out a form in the same page reserving it, at the time of booking it and up to four days later registration and administration fees must be paid. This amount includes the registration and administration of the first two years.

To encourage the use of Internet in Education and e-Government, registered domain names under the following sub-domains, edu.gt, gob.gt mil.gt, are exempted from payment of the established fees.

Any matter that is related to intellectual property rights or any other kind, registered trademarks and/or registered names as domain names, or parts of them, are outside the responsibility of the UVG.
