Cybercrimes in El Salvador
The use of the internet and information technologies is a direct way to commit cybercrimes.
In many countries there is not a regulation relative to the information and communications technologies. As a result, this creates a fake sensation of anonymity and impunity, which facilitates that people think that their actions are not detectable, and much less prosecuted.
Cybercrime Cases
The use of the internet and information technologies is part of the day to day, and so is its misuse. Innumerable extortion are committed using cellphones, through applications for “chatting” that require internet. In the same way, between teenagers, physical aggression are documented and disseminated through social media. Also, crimes are committed against the honor and image of the people, with the thought that there are limits to their freedom of expression in the web.
The list of possible crimes goes from Identity Theft to Distinctive Signs Infringement and the Obtainment and Transfer of Confidential Information.
Laws against cybercrimes in El Salvador
The Special Law against Cybercrimes and Related Rights in force in El Salvador, is one of the first efforts of the country to punish those who commit cybercrimes. With its approval, said law establishes merely criminal sanctions. Therefore, it is important to know those behaviors that the law indicates as illegal, for example:
- Phishing Scams
- Manipulation of Public or private registries
- Harassment
- Inappropriate access to computer systems
- Interference of computer systems, etc.
El Salvador has not been disaffected by the legal implications of the use of the information and communications technologies. The regulation of cybercrimes is an advance for the development of the New Technologies Law.
