Project of feasibility studies for dams in Honduras

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), in compliance with its main objectives, and within the framework of the project “National Programme for the Establishment of Land Dams in Honduras”, approved a technical cooperation through which it will finance feasibility studies for six dams in Honduras. This initiative arises as a result of the importance of generating preventive constructions in the region in a way that develops security for countries, contributing to the fight against climate change.

The project has been valued at USD 5.8 million dollars so that the Government of Honduras can finance the procurement of consulting firms to develop feasibility studies of 6 different dams, including Quebrada La Relumbrosa – La Ceiba, Atlántida; Jalán River – Juticalpa, Olancho; Choluteca River, Hernando López (Rio Hondo) – Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán; Leotuna River – Maraita, Francisco Morazán: Guangololo River – La Paz, La Paz: Texiguat River – Texiguat, Paradise.

The project´s main objective will be to identify the technical and economic requirements necessary for the construction of the six land dams that have a multipurpose character, and to strengthen the regulation of flows and thus the capacity to mitigate damage in case of floods, as well as the water supply for human consumption and irrigation to production. In this way contributing to the 2030 Agenda that aims to meet the Sustainable Development Goal that seeks to ensure the availability of water and sanitation for the global population, under sustainable and equitable management.

In the coming months, the Government of the Republic of Honduras will be initiating the relevant administrative procedures so that consulting firms interested in the project can submit their offers.
