***These big law firms are the natural destination of the majority of UAM’s Faculty of Law graduates.
The students of Law of Universidad Americana, UAM, that stand out for having academic excellence, will have the opportunity to make their internships and be able to make a professional career in the prestigious law firm García & Bodán.
“We have certain standards in order to UAM students to make internships in the law firm and one of them is academic excellence, since we are a law firm that believes that academic excellence is necessary. A second element is the command of English language, because most of our clients are foreign investors”, explained Carlos Téllez, Managing Partner of García & Bodán Managua.
Jesús Herrera, Dean of UAM’s Faculty of Legal Sciences and International Relations, said that this agreement is of great importance for UAM, as it is a strategic agreement since the big law firms are the first natural destination for the graduates of this faculty, given that they put special emphasis in the formation of the students as business advisors.
Even before graduating—according to Herrera—big part of the students of UAM’s Faculty of Law make their professional practices in García & Bodán. The relationship with this law firm with UAM dates from more than 10 years and is being renewed every three years.
“The experience has been really good and that’s why we have been strengthening our bows of collaboration, besides UAM students have the profile we look for: formation in business advice and the command of English language”, said Carlos Téllez.
García & Bodán is positioned in the Central American countries with a regional vision, and this kind of agreements strengthen the liaison with the professionals that day by day are formed in universities. This law firm has been characterized for its vast experience in the legal advice in important transactions related in the practice of Corporate Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Tax and Customs, Intellectual Property, Real Estate and Labor Law, among others.
Mutual benefit
According to the Managing Partner of García & Bodán Managua, the benefit of this agreement is mutual, both for UAM students and the professionals that work in the law firm.
“We have lawyers specialized in different fields of law that can provide trainings and conferences in the university, and this is the contribution that García & Bodán can make to the university and the society”, emphasized.
According to Téllez, García & Bodán seeks that integral lawyer that knows about law, but also understands the business in which the client is involved. “In UAM we have found that professional profile and that’s why we have celebrated three collaboration agreements. We have found there the best available talent and the university motivates their students to a professional exercise”, highlighted.
Since the collaboration agreement was established between both institutions, more than 50 UAM students have made their internships in García & Bodán, and even some have stayed working there, and others have become partners of the law firm.
García & Bodán has presence in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua; in total it has 7 offices in those countries and they’re negotiating the opening of an office in Costa Rica.
The Dean of UAM’s Faculty of Law announced that they’re working in a draft to establish agreements with three of the five most important law firms that operate in Nicaragua.
“What we pretend is to form a kind of consultative council of collaboration to strengthen ties between the academy and these law firms that in the end are the natural destination of our students”, highlighted Herrera.
